About
Charge Your Chromebook, also known as Daily Reminder To Charge Your Chromebook and Don't Forget To Charge Dat Chromebook, refers to a high school and middle school reference of the 2020s about Google Chromebooks which are given individually to each student and taken home by them after school. When students return to school and their Chromebook is not charged, teachers are known to be disappointed. In 2022, young creators on TikTok started reminding each other to charge their Chromebooks in memes and videos. "Daily reminder to charge your Chromebook" also became commonplace as a spam comment.
Origin
TikTok content regarding Chromebook charging started to manifest in early 2022. On January 3rd, 2022, TikToker[1] yeems_ posted a video about how she hadn't touched her Chromebook all winter break and needed to charge it, gaining roughly 617,000 plays and 127,700 likes in nine months, becoming the first known viral instance of a charging Chromebook video (shown below, left). On March 3rd, 2022, the TikTok[2] account charge_your_chromebook1 posted its first video, using a Goofy Ahh sound and having the TTS voice read, "Daily reminder to charge your Chromebook." The video received roughly 18,300 plays and 2,300 likes in seven months (shown below, right).
Spread
On March 7th, 2022, the TikTok[3] account charge_your_chromebook1 posted another video that gained roughly 113,200 plays and 35,100 likes in seven months (shown below, left). Due to the virality of the video, the concept started to pick up in memes on the platform going into the year, peaking in September and October 2022. On September 11th, 2022, TikToker[4] brucedropthesoap posted a photo slideshow showing one image repeatedly, being a Black man holding his finger up to his mouth saying, "Shh," with the caption, "dont forget to charge dat chromebook" (shown below, right). The slideshow received roughly 270,500 plays and 65,200 likes in one month.
Continuing into September 2022, the brucedropthesoap's "Don't Forget To Charge Dat Chromebook" meme was placed at the end of videos, acting as a friendly reminder and a piece of bait-and-switch media. For instance, on September 22nd, 2022, TikToker[5] jack_morris0 stitched a video of Ice Spice with the meme, gaining roughly 357,500 likes in three weeks (shown below, left). On September 24th, 2022, TikToker[6] iamactuallylying posted a similar video that also referenced Rizz and Favorite Candy, Reese's Pieces. In 19 days, the video received roughly 61,500 plays and 11,900 likes (shown below, right).
