About

"Chantaje" TikTok Dance Trend, also known as "Chantaje" by Shakira, is the name of a specific dance done on TikTok using the song "Chantaje" by pop artist Shakira. The trend, which started in late 2020, had a revival in early 2024 with a new consistent dance routine being added and tutorials being made for others to learn the specific steps.

Origin

On November 16th, 2016, the official music video for the song "Chantaje" was released by Shakira and Maluma on Shakira's official YouTube channel.[1] In the video, Shakira is shown doing multiple different smaller dance moves, usually one or two at a time, without a consistent long-form dance established. The music video, which helped inspire the first wave of the dancing trend, received over 2.9 billion views in eight years (shown below).

Four years later, in late 2020, the song would be used as the background beat to a dance trend on TikTok in which people would either copy different moves done by Shakira or perform their own dance moves. On December 30th, 2020, the YouTuber TikTok Style[2] uploaded a compilation of various other TikTokers participating in the dance trend, with many copying the opening set of moves before adding in their own flair (shown below).

Spread

The dance trend eventually died out, with a decline in usage over the following years until early 2024. On February 13th, 2024, TikToker JoseSanz[3] uploaded a TikTok of him and his girlfriend performing a synchronous dance routine to the same audio segment as the previous trend, but having a different set of movements from before. This TikTok, which stated that it was a new trend in a caption, inspired a fresh wave of new attempts at dancing to the audio and earned over 390,000 likes in one month (shown below).

The audio[4] reuploaded by TikToker JoseSanz saw significant usage in the weeks following its creation, with it being used in over 34,000 new TikToks of people trying their own versions of the dance. On February 28th, 2024, TikToker Eryka Gadea[5] uploaded a tutorial video for the dance, showing herself completing the dance while emoji instructions are highlighted to the left when each specific dance move is performed, earning over 45,000 likes in one month (shown below).
