Change Team is a photoshop meme based on an exploitable image of the in-game menu screen of the 2015 vehicular soccer video game Rocket League developed and published by Psyonix. In the series of photoshopped parodies, the in-game menu box is typically set in juxtaposition against a background image depicting a crisis that could sway one's allegiance to the opponent team.
Rocket League was originally released for PC and PlayStation 4 in July 2015, followed by its expanded release for XBox One, OS X and Linux in 2016. The in-game menu screen, which consists of five options including Change Team, didn't quite find its usage as a meme until the morning of March 18th, 2017, when Redditor Alvv[1] submitted a World War II-themed parody of the menu screen featuring an Italian military joke to the /r/meirl subreddit. The post garnered more than 17,000 upvotes prior to being archived.
Later that same evening, Redditor YoImAli reposted the same parody image to /r/MemeEconomy [2] with the post title speculating "Should I invest in 'change team' memes? Do they have potential?" In the following 24 hours, nearly two dozen photoshopped parodies featuring the in-game menu screen set surfaced on Reddit's /r/dankmemes and /r/memeeconomy subreddits[2] before hitting iFunny on the 21st. Early variations tended to have a historical focus in vein with the original (ex: shown below).
