Chadwick Boseman "I'm Dead" refers to a video reaction series featuring actor Chadwick Boseman, star of the 2018 Marvel superhero films Black Panther and Avengers: Infinity War. In the video, an entertainment reporter asks Boseman about his role in the 2019 film Avengers: Endgame. However, due to the end of the previous installment, Boseman only responds "I'm dead," which has since been the subject of various jokes.

On August 28th, 2020, Chadwick Boseman died of stage four colon cancer which he was diagnosed with in 2016. The information of Boseman's illness was kept secret from the public. Online, some believe that the actor was referring to his terminal diagnosis in the interview, which caused the meme to trend following his death.

Origin

On April 2nd, 2019, the Access YouTube channel published a red-carpet interview with Boseman. When asked about Avengers: Endgame, Boseman only responds, "I'm dead." The post received more than 72,000 views in six days (shown below).


Spread

On April 5th, Twitter user @cinematicmemes posted an edited version of the video, highlighting Boseman's response. They captioned the post, "When Chadwick Boseman said, 'I’m dead.' I felt that." The post received more than 21,000 retweets, 67,000 likes and 15 million in three days (shown below).


That day, Twitter user @h7ney shared the video with the caption "LMAOOOOOOOO." The post received more than 50,000 retweets and 122,000 likes in three days (shown below).


Following the post, people used the image to caption various jokes that express the feeling of being in trouble with an authority figure. For example, Twitter user @thisisjazzz used the video to the question "someone: how’s school going?" The post received more than 3,300 retweets and 9,800 likes in two days (shown below).

Chadwick Boseman's Death

On August 28th, actor Chadwick Boseman died of cancer aged 43.[7] He was diagnosed with cancer in 2016, battling his illness as it progressed to stage four. Boseman's illness was kept secret from the public.
