CGI Sonic Edits refer to edits of character Sonic the Hedgehog's appearance in the trailer for 2019 film Sonic the Hedgehog, done with the purposes of improving original design, artistic expression and/or comedy.

Origin

On April 30th, 2019, a trailer for 2019 film Sonic the Hedgehog, based on the video game series of the same name, was uploaded to YouTube.^[1] In the trailer, the CGI character is shown in multiple scenes.

Spread

Following the release of the trailer, multiple posts critisizing and ridiculing the design of the character in the film were posted to social media.^[2]^[3]

At the same time, users on Twitter, Instagram and other platforms posted edits of Sonic's appearance in the film, mainly in the shed scene, done with the purposes of improving the character's design, artistic expression and/or comedy.

On the day of the trailer release, Twitter user @virtandenson posted the first known edit done with the purpose of improving the character's design, with the post gaining over 27,800 retweets and 122,800 likes in two weeks.^[4]

In the following weeks, multiple users on Twitter, Reddit, Instagram and other platforms submitted edits of the still image, including versions in which faces of other characters were superimposed onto still images from the trailer. For example, on April 30th, artist fuckadvertisements posted an edit in which Sonic appeared as a demonic creature, gaining 14,400 likes in 11 days (shown below, left).^[5] On May 5th, 2019, artist adam.the.creator submitted a mashup of the character with actor Danny DeVito (shown below, center).^[6] The post gained over 25,400 likes in five days. On May 6th, 2019, artist Shädman tweeted a genderbent version of the character (shown below, right), with the post receiving over 6,200 retweets and 41,000 likes in four days.^[7]
