CGI Monkeys Dancing refers a Coldplay music video for the 2015 song "Adventure Of A Lifetime" which features a group of CGI monkeys performing a dance. In August 2016, clips from the video were used to create a Harambe funeral edit and two years later similar edits were made to clips of the video and posted to YouTube and Instagram.
Origin
On November 27th, 2015, Coldplay[1] announced the release of the official video (shown below) for "Adventure Of A Lifetime" on Twitter. The announcement gained over 4,400 likes and 3,100 retweets in four years.
Spread
On August 10th, 2016, YouTuber ebgta uploaded "Harambe's Funeral Dance Tribute" which uses clips from the Coldplay music video (shown below, left). The video gained over 500,700 views in two years. Two years later, on August 20th, 2018, more people began using the footage in edits. YouTuber Kyle Scam uploaded "monkeys dance to minecraft" (shown below, right). The video gained over 6,200 views in a year.
On September 14th, 2018, Instagram user LargeTrap added different music to the video and added the text "so basically I'm monkey" (shown below). The video gained over 122,900 views in a year.
In September 2018, Instagram user nova_xeno_[2] posted several iterations of dancing monkey edits and in October, many edits posted to YouTube included the text "so basically I'm monky" or "Monky time" like Trudeau TV's edit from October 15th (shown below).
