CG5 Ruins Memes or CG5 Kills Memes refers to a series of memes and posts claiming that YouTuber and musician CG5 ruins or kills memes when he writes songs about them. CG5 is known to write songs about viral memes, with past examples including the Grimace Shake trend, Ohio memes and 1 2 Buckle My Shoe. The axiom and memes referencing it became popularized on TikTok starting around May 2023 and spread over the following months, also inspiring memes on Twitter.

Origin

CG5's Meme Songs

YouTuber and musician CG5 started posting songs based on viral memes on October 10th, 2018, when he posted a video to YouTube[1] for a song titled "The Møth and the Lämp" based on moth lamp memes, garnering over 270,000 views in five years (shown below).

CG5 continued to make songs based on viral memes over the following years, resulting in a YouTube[2] playlist titled "Meme Songs" consisting of 34 videos by July 2023. Some of the most popular songs are about the Ugandan Knuckles meme (shown below, left) and the evil Duolingo owl memes (shown below, right).

CG5 Kills "Only In Ohio" Memes

On December 30th, 2022, CG5 published a music video and song about Only In Ohio memes to YouTube[3] titled "Only In Ohio," garnering over 4.4 million views in seven months (shown below). Some of the top comments under the video, made in early 2023, claim CG5 killed the meme, including a comment[4] by @themashtyx reading, "CG5, you are a timer for the death of memes," garnering over 2,400 upvotes in six months.

On January 4th, 2023, TikToker[5] @woomyaisaka posted a video where he dances to the song, captioned, "Of course CG5 made a bad song about Ohio, cuz he finally wanted the meme to die," garnering over 850,000 views in six months (shown below).

Comments and videos about CG5 ruining memes became increasingly popular in both the comment sections of his meme music videos on YouTube and TikTok and on TikTok in general throughout 2023, with CG5 often playing into the meme. On May 2nd, 2023, CG5 posted a video to TikTok[6] captioned "I’m here to kill the meme" where he does a rendition of the 1 2 buckle my shoe meme, garnering over 4.3 million views in two months. On May 3rd, TikToker[7] @alexthelionshusband posted a video claiming he's ruining the meme, garnering over 500,000 views in the same span of time (shown below).

CG5 Ruins The 'Grimace Shake Trend'

On June 28th, 2023, CG5 posted a video to TikTok[8] where he sings a song about the Grimace Shake trend while also doing the trend, garnering over 3.3 million views in two weeks. On June 30th, he published a full original song and music video to YouTube,[9] garnering over 2 million views in 12 days (shown below). The top comment on the video at the time of writing reads, "All good things come to an end, but they end even faster when this guy shows up."

On July 5th, TikToker[10] @_rador posted a video of CG5's Grimace Shake TikTok upload with a caption about how he killed the meme, garnering over a million views in eight days (shown below, left).

On July 12th, 2023, Twitter[11] user @Homdogger posted a meme about CG5's reputation for ruining memes, writing, "the internet when cg5 makes a song about anything," garnering over 6,300 likes in a day (shown below).

CG5 Kills "Chill Bill" Meme

On July 12th, 2023, CG5 posted a video to TIkTok[12] where he raps about the Chill Bill meme over the Chill Bill Song, garnering over 1.3 million views in a day (shown below, left). Commenters quickly accused him of killing the meme.
