About

Celebrity Pokémon Evolutions are a series of visual charts illustrating celebrities with common characteristics or facial resemblance in parallel to the evolutionary lineage of a character from the Pokémon anime and videogame franchise. When multiple celebrities are used, the subjects are typically ranked in the order of physical attractiveness or prestige. See also: Totally Looks Like.

Origin

The earliest known instance of Celebrity Pokemon Evolution chart was uploaded by Redditor travmasterx[1] on August 9th. The image thread accrued a 68% Like rating on the site with over 800,000 views.

Precursors

Pokemon characters and celebrities have crossed paths prior to this series, most notably through the comparative two-pane series "Celebrities That Look Like Pokemons," which compares celebrities to certain Pokemon based on facial expression or clothing/hair style, that began on the humor site Smosh in 2010[7][8] and fanart of celebrities' Pokemon alter egos that first emerged via pop culture portal UGO[5] in March 2011.

Spread

FunnyJunk user "brodium" uploaded an alternate image to the website[2] on August 18th, 2011. The image showed the rock-type Pokémon Geodude evolving into the forms of Graveler from Pokemon and Golem from The Lord of the Rings saga, juxtaposed with comedian actor Jonah Hill evolving into fellow comedians Seth Rogen and Zach Galifianakis. This instance has received a total of 4,116 up votes as of August 31st, 2011.

Two additional instances were posted to the site The Bored Ninja[6] on August 18th, 2011. Memebase[3] posted a derivative image featuring Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and Mila Kunis on August 28th, 2011. The following day, a thread surfaced on 4chan titled "Evolution thread?" with the original Geodude evolution image attached. Pleated Jeans[4] posted a round-up of celebrity Pokémon evolutions on August 29th, 2011.
