About

Celebrities Complaining About Quarantine refers to a series of memes used to describe how several celebrities complained about being forced to stay in their homes for quarantine during the coronavirus pandemic. The most commonly seen format used features an above caption of “Celebrities” followed by “Their home” or “Their house” with a reaction image depicting a mansion or other elaborate dwelling, but numerous variations including object labeling memes and exploitables can also be seen using the concept. The theme was primarily seen on Reddit and Twitter but appeared on other platforms throughout March 2020.

Origin

Following the spread of the coronavirus, particularly in early March 2020, several countries began issuing shelter-in-place orders or lockdowns to help stem the tide of infections. Amid these orders, numerous celebrities began sharing their quarantine experiences on social media, uploading photos and videos of their extravagant dwellings with some even posting emotional breakdowns caused by their quarantine. As a result, users across several of these platforms and other sites proceeded to mock them for “attempting to relate to common people” or “complaining about being locked in their million-dollar homes” through tweets and memes.

Although the first meme to use the theme is unknown, users online began making such reactions as early as mid-March 2020. One such example was posted on March 20th, 2020, by Twitter[1] user @CFCbezz as a reply to singer Sam Smith’s “quarantine meltdown” photos. The tweet (shown below) received over 320,000 likes and nearly 60,000 retweets. Other users also replied in the comments with additional humorous captions.

Spread

The theme continued to spread in March as users from other social platforms and websites began joining in. On March 21st, 2020, Redditor[2] throwmeawaypop posted a meme to the r/DunderMifflin sub referencing celebrities in quarantine. This post (seen below) received nearly 32,000 upvotes, 448 comments and a Reddit award.

On Twitter,[4] user Dave Eternal tweeted a variant on March 22nd, 2020, with a caption of “Celebrities in quarantine be like” and a reaction image of Ellen DeGeneres and Arnold Schwarzenegger from their relevant posts. This tweet (seen below) was retweeted almost 1,000 times and liked over 3,800 times.
