About
The "Ceilings" Trend is a TikTok trend set to a sped-up version of the song "Ceilings" by Lizzy McAlpine in which participants lip dub to the song while dramatically running and dancing around outside, the participant often wearing a dress or taking off a layer of clothes to reveal a floor-length gown underneath as the song builds. The trend became popularized around late January 2023, becoming increasingly viral in late February and March.
Origin
On January 10th, 2023, musician and TikToker[1] @lizzymcalpine posted a video teasing a sped-up version of her song "Ceilings" where she passionately lip dubs to the track, garnering over 4.6 million views in two months (shown below).
It is unclear who was the first to lip dub to the song besides Lizzy. One of the earliest viral examples was posted by TikToker[2] @brosnxn on January 15th, 2023, where he passionately lip dubs to the song while running and dancing outside in the snow as the camera follows behind him, garnering over 1.3 million views in two months (shown below).
Spread
The trend spread over the following months. On January 27th, 2023, TikToker[3] @d3finitelynotsarah posted a video doing the trend, garnering over 300,000 views in two months (shown below, left). On January 29th, TikToker[4] @hanamartinx posted a POV sketch video showing the camera operator filming the trend, garnering over 7.8 million views in two months (shown below, right).
The trend grew in popularity throughout February and March 2023. Many participants started doing the trend while wearing a long, flowing dress, sometimes hiding the dress under their clothes at first and taking it off as the song builds. For example, on February 12th, TikToker[5] @anna.mayz posted a video like this, garnering over 16 million views in a month (shown below).
On February 25th, musician and actress Victoria Justice did the trend on TikTok,[6] garnering over 9.4 million views in two weeks (shown below, left). On February 26th, TikToker[7] @sssophiaaad posted a video attempting to direct her dad on how to do the trend, garnering over 10 million views in the same rough span of time (shown below, right).
