Cave Story Remixes, also known as "X Story" or "Cave X", refers to a series of YouTube Poop Music Videos (YTPMVs) that sample the 8-bit style soundtrack of the 2004 freeware video game Cave Story^[1] produced by Studio Pixel.

Origin

The soundtrack to Cave Story was made available some time in 2010 via CaveStory.org^[2] and that year, YouTuber mssnor^[3] uploaded the first remix video using one of these tracks. The video remixed the game's self-titled theme (shown below, left) with artwork from the cartoon webseries Baman Piderman (shown below, right). Though mssnor's account was later deactivated, the video was reuploaded by vbictor97 on July 5th, 2010, gaining more than 8,100 views.

Spread

In June 2011, Cave Story YTPMVs were discussed on a thread dedicated to these types of videos on Gaia Online.^[8] That fall, YouTuber palkiasv held a Cave Story YTPMV Contest^[5], resulting in nearly 60 submissions.^[7] Other discussion of Cave Story remix videos has taken place on the Roblox forums^[9], YouChew.net^[10] and Equestria Daily.^[11] Most of the Cave Story YTPMVs use the game's main theme and are named with the phrasal template "(X) Story" or "Cave (X)." However, some use other songs and tend to have different name formats, but still continue to involve "cave" or "story" in the title. In addition to the videos, fans of the game have released three albums worth of remixed songs from the original soundtrack through the Cave Story Remix Project.^[12]
