On January 22nd, 2025, the official X^[1] account for Street Fighter video game series posted a teaser video for Mai Shiranui, a Fatal Fury and King of Fighters character and an upcoming character in Street Fighter 6. The teaser showcased Mai's idle character select screen animation, with Mai, dressed in a casual outfit of a white tank top and pink dolphin shorts, lounging in a chair in a relaxed pose. The video (shown below) garnered over 5,600 reposts and 37,000 likes in four days.

On January 23rd, 2025, X^[2] user @Punishere1_ posted a GIF of the animation (shown below), which received over 6,400 reposts and 64,000 likes in three days (shown below).

Starting on January 22nd, 2025, users on X / Twitter, Bluesky and other sites posted fan art and cosplay examples of Casual Mai, with the outfit also inspiring jokes and memes.

For example, on that day, X^[3] user @ReignOfPride posted an image of Casual Mai together with the I Am Goon reaction image. The post (shown below) received over 1,200 reposts and 33,000 likes in four days.

Also on January 22nd, artist @corvusglaive99 posted the earliest notable fan art of Casual Mai (shown below). The artwork received over 1,800 reposts and 18,000 likes on X^[4] in five days.

The outfit continued to inspire fan art, cosplay and other fan-made content through late January 2025.
