Cash Pope refers to a grocery store in Dos Hermanas, Spain, founded in 2015, but more specifically the mascot of the store that is a mash-up of Glen Quagmire from Family Guy and Popeye the Sailor Man. Photos of the strange mascot and brand first surfaced on Twitter in 2017, however, Cash Pope became more prominent on Reddit and iFunny starting in 2018.

Origin

On May 19th, 2017, Twitter^[1] user @notrevenant surfaced a photo of a car with the Cash Pope logo and mascot on it, most likely a company car owned by the grocery store. The tweet (shown below) received 137 likes over the course of five years.

Spread

On July 8th, 2018, Redditor^[2] vaultmuppet uploaded an image to the subreddit /r/crappyoffbrands showing the Cash Pope storefront, which has a large sign depicting the cartoon mascot. The image (shown below) received roughly 5,400 upvotes over the course of four years. Additionally, the image was taken from the Cash Pope Facebook^[3] page.

On August 7th, 2018, a different image of the Cash Pope storefront was shared to /r/crappyoffbrands by Redditor^[4] CarbonCompositeBeing. The image (shown below) received roughly 13,200 upvotes over the course of four years.

On December 8th, 2020, the r/CashPope subreddit^[9] was created. Over the course of ten months, it currently has 32 members.

Cash Pope memes began surfacing on iFunny at the end of 2020. On November 30th, 2020, Funnier^[5] @CashPope posted a meme that included multiple images of the Cash Pope mascot and logo, using the "I Would Go To School If" meme format. The meme (shown below) received roughly 1,700 smiles over the course of one year. The meme was reposted to Reddit's /r/OkBuddyRetard ^[6] on December 21st, 2020, where it received 605 upvotes over the course of 10 months.

On January 4th, 2021, the Cash Pope storefront was featured again on /r/crappyoffbrands^[7] and received roughly 6,600 upvotes over the course of 10 months. This specific post gave more attention to the Cash Pope logo and mascot as an exploitable in memes on Reddit, specifically in /r/okbuddyretard. On January 11th, 2021, Redditor ^[8] chris_faggart posted a Cash Pope meme to the subreddit. The meme (shown below) received roughly 3,300 upvotes over the course of 10 months.
