About

Cartoon Tony Romo refers to an illustration of CBS sports commentator and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo used as an on-screen graphic during the CBS broadcast of an NFL game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Carolina Panthers in mid-October 2017.

Origin

On October 12th, CBS included a graphic of an illustrated Tony Romo that appeared when Romo made points about the game between the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles. That day, the Dallas Morning News Cowboys-covering Twitter account tweeted a comparison between the real-life Romo and his illustrated counterpart (shown below).

Spread

Once the graphic was displayed on screen, Twitter users watching the game immediately noticed and began joking about it. @BarstoolSports[1] tweeted that Romo looked like a shady used-car salesman, gaining over 450 retweets (shown below, left). @NFLRT[2] tweeted a photoshopped image which made the cartoon Romo appear like a mascot on a frozen pizza box, gaining over 650 retweets, (shown below, right).

Jokes and commentary on the cartoon Romo were covered by Twitter Moments,[3] Dallas News,[4] and SB Nation.[5]
