Carmy Yelling, also known as Chef Yelling, refers to memes featuring the character Carmen "Carmy" Berzatto (played by Jeremy Allen White) from The Bear screaming while cooking food in his restaurant. The meme was initially used to joke about the high-stress environment of the show and mock Carmy for his anxious attitude toward a career of his choosing, with original 4chan greentext versions of the meme reading some variation of the phrase, "Ohh no someone ordered food from my restaurant and now I have to make it aaaaah." The meme came to be used to mock people for being incompetent or stressing about their own jobs and responsibilities.

Origin

The scene showing Carmy screaming while making food originates from the second episode of the first season of The Bear, which aired on June 23rd, 2022. After Carmy falls asleep watching a cooking show, he experiences a stressful dream about working a day in his restaurant with seemingly endless orders pouring in. As he awakes, he realizes that he almost set his kitchen on fire while sleep-cooking.^[1]

Jokes about Carmy complaining and screaming after having to do basic restaurant tasks appeared on forums like 4chan's /tv/ as early as September 2023, with an anonymous user writing, "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH A CUSTOMER MADE AN ORDER AND I HAVE TO MAKE IT IN EXCHANGE FOR HIS MONEY" on September 18th, 2023.^[2]

In May 2024, a 4chan post featuring an image of Carmy screaming began making the rounds online. The text on the post read, "OHHHHH GOD OH FUCK SOMEONE ORDERED FOOD FROM MY RESTAURANT AND NOW I HAVE TO MAKE IT AHHHHH"

The joke runs parallel to a similar meme posted to 4chan's /tv/ board on May 11th, 2024.^[3] Reposts of the joke appeared on the subreddits /r/greentext^[4] and /r/KitchenConfidential,^[5] as well as iFunny^[6] and the X^[7] account @sweatyhairy on May 11th, 2024 (seen below).

On May 22nd, 2024, X^[8] user @uncledoomer posted a photo of Carmy screaming alongside the text, "WEVE GOT PIZZA ORDERS COMING IN / WHERE THE FUCK IS MY NONTOXIC GLUUUUE," gathering over 10,000 likes on a post criticizing Google Search AI Overviews (seen below).

On July 24th, 2024, X^[9] user @SayaDoesStuff posted a similar meme, complaining about having to build the limbs of their Gunpla kit and gathering over 3,000 likes in a month (seen below).

By mid-2024, the image of Carmy screaming came to be used to make tongue-in-cheek jokes about people having to do the jobs they applied for and were hired to do.

August 13th, 2024, posts from X^[10]^[11] users @ryxcommar and @chinesegon joke about data scientists and software engineers having to provide data and write code. The posts gathered over 10,000 and 20,000 likes, respectively, in two weeks (seen below).

An August 17th post from X^[12] user @OrionSpeedwagon read, "AAAHHH GOD THEY WANT ME TO GUESS IN THE FIGHTING GAME FUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK," gathering over 12,000 likes in 10 days (seen below).
