Cannot Believe We Used to Listen to This Unironically refers to a series of bait-and-switch videos in which the caption is combined with the music video for 100 gecs' "Money Machine." The posts, which appeared in late 2023 and 2024, lead people to believe that they are critical of 100 gecs' music and the band's fans, while the audio is actually replaced with another song.

Origin

On December 10th, 2023, X^[1] / Twitter user @jansqueezy posted the first 30 seconds of the music video for 100 gecs' song "Money Machine," commenting, "I won’t forget some of u guys used to like this." The post (shown below) garnered over 9,100 reposts and 13,000 likes in five months.

On January 14th, 2024, X^[2] user @trndytrndy posted the music video with a similar caption, however, the music in the video was replaced with audio of a boy rapping. The post garnered over 920 reposts and 5,100 likes in four months.

On January 15th, X^[3] user @GRIMVVICE quoted the video, commenting, "Not a single person pressed play on this lmaooo." The post (shown below) gained over 680 reposts and 14,000 likes in four months.

Spread

Starting in mid-January 2024, more similar bait posts were shared by users on X / Twitter. For example, on January 15th, 2024, X^[4] user @VyletPony replaced the audio with "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. The post (shown below) garnered over 420 reposts and 2,100 likes in four months.

On January 28th, 2024, X^[5] user @ozlako posted a Venus Slime Fields meme based on the format that received over 950 reposts and 6,800 likes in three months (shown below).

The format saw more usage on X / Twitter in the following months.
