Origin

The earliest instance that falls under this category is Can this donkey from Shrek get more fans than Sarkozy?[2] :http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=44958576484 (Pour que l'âne de Shrek comptabilise plus de fans que Sarkozy), created on December, 15th, 2008. In less than two weeks, the donkey's fan count surpassed that of President Sarkozy with 43,738 Facebook fans (at the time).

Justin Bieber vs. Onion Ring

Can this onion ring get more fans than Justin Bieber?[1] was created by Facebook user Toby Brittan on February 1st, 2010. In the same week, on February 6th," Toby's Onion Ring[3] completely surpassed the pop star's count by a margin of 500,000+ fans. The original fan page was subsequently deactivated by Facebook admins, but several copycat pages have been created since then.

Pickle vs. Nickelback

"Can this pickle get more fans than Nickelback?[4] was created by Coral Anne on February 3rd, 2010. Evidently seen by many as a funny / valid proposition, the Pickle's fanbase snowballed rapidly into a viral campaign. In the next few days, FB fan page was picked up by Digg and other popular blogs, along with the Fried Onion Ring's fan page. On February 19th, the number of Pickle's FB fans exceeded that of Nickelback. As of March 30th, 2010, the Pickle has a count of 1,580,178 fans and Nickelback has a count of 1,487,303 fans.

Nickelback's Response

According to Popeater[5] from Popeater.com, Nickelback singer Chad Kroeger posted a bitter message on the Pickle's Facebook page, reading:

"Your page will be closing in 2 weeks."

In response, the group's founder posted a lengthy note to all of the pickle fans, explaining that it wasn't her true intention to endorse hate against the band.

This pickle page is strictly intended for humour, and anyone else can see this how they wish to, but the whole time I was pro-pickle, more than anti-Nickelback.

YouTube Rewind 2018

On December 6th, 2018, YouTube released YouTube Rewind 2018: Everyone Controls Rewind (shown below). The video contains appearances by actor Will Smith, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah, Bongo Cat, Walmart Yodel Boy and various notable YouTubers, including Casey Neistat and Tyler Blevins. Within 24 hours, the video accumulated upwards of 28 million views and 630,000 comments. Additionally, the video received only 985,000 likes over two million dislikes.

On December 10th, the FlareTV YouTube channel posted a live counter comparing the dislikes of the 2018 YouTube Rewing to the music video for "Baby" by Justin Bieber (shown below).

On December 13th, 2018, the 2018 YouTube Rewind reached 10 million dislikes, passing "Baby" as the most-disliked video on the entire platform. That day, YouTuber PewDiePie uploaded a video titled "The Youtube Rewind 2018 Roast" (shown below).

That day, the official @YouTube Twitter feed tweeted a screenshot of the FlareTV dislike comparison (shown below).


Egg vs. Kylie Jenner

World Record Egg, also known as The Egg Meme and Instagram Egg, is a stock photograph of an egg that became the most-liked post on Instagram in mid-January 2019, overtaking a post by Kylie Jenner announcing the birth of her daughter Stormi Webster.

On January 4th, 2019, the @world_record_egg Instagram page uploaded a photograph of a brown egg along with the description "Let’s set a world record together and get the most liked post on Instagram" (shown below). Within 10 days, the post gained over 28.3 million likes, overtaking the previous most-liked post[3] published by Kylie Jenner in February 2018.[7]
