About
Camavinga Memes refers to a series of videos and photo slideshows made about professional, French footballer Eduardo Camavinga (Real Madrid) which centered on the perception that he could play every position on the field. Due to his versatility, meme creators on TikTok imagined that he could fill any role, including non-soccer-related ones, or fix any problem. The concept surrounding Camavinga's versatility also centered on a video of him playing goalkeeper, posted to his Instagram story in mid-2023. The Camavinga memes on TikTok also used a "Camavinga song" which was actually the song "Merci les bleus" by Vegedream, made for the French national team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Origin
On May 27th, 2023, X[1] user @YashRMFC quote retweeted a football-related news post that stated Real Madrid midfielder Eduardo Camavinga had played center back, left back and left wing in one game. @YashRMFC humorously photoshopped Camavinga as a goalkeeper, writing, "Hear me out," receiving roughly 28,200 likes in three months (shown below).
A few months later, on July 5th, 2023, X[2] user @neoater posted a screen-recording of Camavinga's then-recent Instagram story, showing him playing goalie in a backyard setting. @neoater captioned the video, "camavinga took 'he can play any position' way too seriously," gaining roughly 1,500 likes in one month (shown below). Later on July 5th, X[3] user @YashRMFC reposted @neoater's video, writing, "Nah Camavinga took this way too seriously man wtf," gaining roughly 25,200 likes in one month.
Spread
The memes spread to TikTok sometime in August 2023, posted under a sound[4] that has since been removed from the platform, originally created by TikToker[5] @kx.rxm (also known as ♕Bellingham♕). The original video, which has since been deleted, was posted sometime in early August 2023, and led to mass usage from TikTokers[6][7] (examples shown below).
The sound used a sped-up section of the song "Merci les bleus" by Vegedream, that was made for the French national team during the 2022 FIFA World Cup (YouTube[8] upload shown below).
