Cállate Hetero (English: "Shut Up Straight") is a sarcastic expression in Spanish used by the LGBTQ+ community to humorously silence and react to heterosexuals on social media. The catchphrase comes from the expression "cállate blanca," which is a viral picture from May 2020 of a Mexican woman wearing a T-shirt that says, "Shut Up White."

Origin

On October 17th, 2017, an unknown user of the Meme Generator^[1] website uploaded a Batman Slapping Robin meme (seen below) with the Spanish overlay text "Cállate Hetero," which translates as "Shut up straight." This is the first known example of the phrase appearing in a meme online.

The catchphrase "Cállate hetero" started to be used on social media as a sarcastic expression around June 2020. For instance, Twitter^[2] user @juan66457153 posted a photoshopped picture of a Mexican woman wearing a T-shirt that originally had the text "Cállate Blanca" on it but was recaptioned to read "Cállate Hetero." The meme was used as a sarcastic "shut up" response directed to a straight man during an argument on Twitter. The meme (seen below) was uploaded on July 17th, 2020, garnering 32 likes and one retweet in three years.

On January 17th, 2023, Instagram^[3] user @colitafilms uploaded a photoshopped cover using the "Cállate hetero" meme to announce the creation of a music playlist dedicated to LGBTQ+ artists. The post (seen below) received over 100 likes in six months.
