The clip was posted to TikTok in September 2023 and was popularized as the subject of memes throughout 2024.

Origin

On September 13th, 2023, Tiktoker^[1] @goodgriefsyt, also known as TurtleDestroyer on Kick,^[2] posted a clip from a Call of Duty stream in which he annoys another player by giving him simple math problems to solve then insisting that he has to be using a calculator, or "calc," to get the answers so fast. Throughout the video he keeps reminding his chat that "calc" stands for "calculator," saying at one point, "If anyone joined the stream recently, calc stands for calculator, I'm just using slang." The video gained over 5.4 million views in a year.

Spread

The clip garnered viral spread and became the subject of memes throughout 2024, with TurtleDestroyer also attempting the prank on other people. On May 24th, 2024, u/its-angle posted an animation to /r/Deltarune^[3] based on the original viral video, garnering over 1,400 upvotes in six months.

On June 28th, TikToker^[4] @thog.dontcare posted a clip of TurtleDestroyer referencing the calc meme during another stream, attaching an image of Ninja's low taper fade meme to the video as a reference to Ninja dragging the meme, suggesting that TurtleDestroyer is also dragging the meme, garnering over 900,000 views in five months.

On November 9th, X user @blephin_ posted a meme that garnered over 57,000 likes in six days. That day, X^[5] user @n1ko_1s commented, "Does anyone know what 'calc' means? Need some help here," comparing the two memes, garnering over 4,200 likes in the same span of time.
