About

Buzz Lightyear Clones, also known as Buzz Lightyear Aisle, is an object-labeling meme involving Tim Allen’s Buzz Lightyear from the 1999 Pixar animated film Toy Story 2. Typically in memes, it's used as a two-panel exploitable that features a single image of a Buzz Lightyear "clone" above another zoomed-out image in which it is revealed that there are hundreds of identical clones on shelves alongside him, meant to express that something isn't unique or special.

Origin

Toy Story 2 originally released on November 13th, 1999. In it, the space ranger Buzz Lightyear discovers hundreds of identical versions of himself in "hypersleep" pods in a toy store (seen below).[1]

After screenshots of this scene went viral in early 2021, it became a template utilizing both object-labeling and simple captions to reflect that something isn't unique. The first known usage of this meme as a template occurred when Redditor u/Handoxthehand uploaded this image to /r/memes,[2] titled "That’s a Lot" (seen below). It was posted on January 22nd, 2021, and received 14,100 upvotes and 62 comments in four months.

Spread

On February 28th, 2021, Twitter[3] user @MemesCentral posted another example of this meme to their account and received 242 likes and 51 retweets in four months. This example appears to be inspired by the first, as it was titled "GoOd lUcK FiNdInG oThEr GiRlS lIkE mE!!!" This is the first known example of object labeling being used with the meme template that would later make up the bulk of the format.

On June 11th, 2021, there was a resurgence in interest towards the template after the meme became popular on /r/PrequelMemes. Posted by u/Adronikos,[4] the second image of the template is used to represent the Star Wars clone army. Titled "Your Buzz Lightyears are very impressive. You must be proud," the meme received over 5,500 upvotes in five days, along with 29 comments (shown below).

In addition to the two-panel image format, GIF captions based on the scene have also been circulated on iFunny, Twitter and Reddit.
