About
Buttered Sausage refers to a viral clip of actor Gary Busey saying, "Let's talk about buttered sausage," on a web series called The Jeff Richards Show. Despite looking like Gary Busey, the man in the clip was not Gary Busey and was instead an AI-generated Deepfake using the actor's face. Originally posted to YouTube in August 2023, the clip gained increased virality on TikTok.
Origin
On August 16th, 2023, The Jeff Richards Show posted a video to YouTube[1] called "Gary Busey with Jayson Thibault 'JRS 71 Deepfake'" in which Jeff Richards was using a deepfake face filter to impersonate actor Gary Busey. The video received roughly 33,300 views in eight days. On the day prior, August 15th, The Jeff Richards Show had posted a clip to TikTok[2] that acted as a promo. The clip was called, "Gary Busey is the jam," and included Richards as Busey saying, "Let's talk about buttered sausage." The video received roughly 1 million plays and 54,300 likes in nine days (shown below).
Let's talk about buttered sausage. Where it comes from? What it does? Why is it doing what it's doing? Get it out of my face.
Spread
The video quickly gained usage on TikTok, first as a sound, evident in a video from TikToker[3] @marcilynlouise on August 16th, 2023, which received roughly 37,300 plays in eight days (shown below, left). Soon after, others on the app started to greenscreen the deepfake Busey, such as TikToker[4] @woodland_hip84 on August 19th, gaining roughly 71,200 plays and 3,000 likes in five days (shown below, right).
On August 20th, 2023, TikToker[5] @bosephus123 posted video that cropped the original, gaining roughly 8.9 million plays and 1 million likes in four days (shown below).
In turn, more videos surfaced on TikTok[6][7] that exploited the original clip.
