On October 5th, 1946, Looney Tunes cartoon The Big Snooze premiered in the United States.[1] In one scene of the cartoon, the character Bugs Bunny drinks a bottle of "Hare Tonic" to save himself from falling.

On February 14th, 2015, Tumblr user whyx3 posted a still image from the cartoon, rotated 90 degrees, in which Bugs Bunny is about to drink from the bottle (shown below, right).[2] The post gained over 11,600 likes and reblogs in four years.

Spread

Following the whyx3's post, the image gained moderate spread as a reaction and a meme format. For example, on March 4th, 2017, a since-deleted Facebook community posted a meme based on the image which gained over 80 likes (shown below, left).[3][4] On April 28th, 2017, the Facebook community Dungeons and Dragons Memes made a post based on the image which gained over 3,300 likes and 1,000 shares in two years (shown below, right).[5] On Twitter, Funnyjunk and other websites, the image saw use as a reaction.[6][7]

On August 21st, 2017, Tumblr user Zestyblog used a close-up of Bugs Bunny's face as a reaction to another Tumblr post (shown below, left).[8] The response gained over 41,000 likes and reblogs in two years.

On March 16th, 2018, the close-up was added to ShitpostBot 5000 image gallery.[9]

In mid-April 2019, a close-up of Bugs Bunny's face, paired with the caption "No", gained significant spread as a reaction image. On April 14th, 2019, Redditor asofi00 made the earliest known post featuring the "No" caption, garnering over 29,800 upvotes in five days (shown below).[10]

In the following days, the image gained moderate popularity on Reddit,[11] as well as saw spread in Spanish-speaking meme communities.[12]
