About

Buffalo Bills Pit or Bills Sacrificial Stadium Pit refers to a rumored superstition among fans of the NFL football team the Buffalo Bills that if a fan falls into a hole in the construction area where the team's new stadium is being built, it means the team will win. After it was discovered by social media users in January 2024, jokes about Bills fans "sacrificing" people to "the pit" spread among sports fans online, spawning memes and discourse.

Origin

On January 12th, 2024, Twitter / X user @BuffaClothes[1] posted a tweet that read, "I have a source (Dr. Jerome Silberman) inside the ECMC Emergency Room that has informed me that, despite no reports shared by local media, they have seen a patient that has fallen into the pit on EVERY SINGLE GAMEDAY since the start of the Bills 5 game win streak." The "pit" they're referring to is the construction site for the Bills' new stadium. The tweet gained over 260 retweets and 1,100 likes in five days (shown below).

Spread

After the tweet was posted, Bills fans began joking that to ensure the team's winning streak, which has extended into the 2024 playoffs, a fan must be "fed" to the pit. Also on January 12th, 2024, Twitter user @Buffwagon819[2] tweeted, "Keep it going. The pit must be fed," gaining over 180 retweets and 2,200 likes in five days (shown below).

On January 14th, TikToker @pickempeteyy posted a TikTok about the developing superstition, gaining over 25,000 likes in three days (shown below).

The Bills won their January 15th, 2024, NFL playoff game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, further fueling the theory of "the pit." The theory attracted media coverage from publications including Barstool[3] and USA Today.[4]

Others joined in on the developing superstition as it continued to spread on social media. On January 16th, Twitter user @NoShaveDaveee[5] posted a picture of Hillary Clinton, joking it represented Taylor Swift watching a Bills fan jump into the pit ahead of their team's game against the Chiefs gaining over 160 retweets and 3,000 likes in one day (shown below, left). On the 17th, Twitter user @buffalorantings[6] posted a Wesley Snipes Crying meme at a lawyer who advised Bills fans to not jump in the pit, gaining over 100 retweets and 1,900 likes in a matter of hours (shown below, right).
