BTA is an internet slang acronym that stands for the slang phrase "Belt to Ass," which was popularized in youth football circles, particularly on TikTok, in September and October 2024. The trend shows young American football players spanking their opponents with towels after a game in videos set to the song "Gettin' Nat Belt" by SG Batman. The trend drew criticism from some for being unsportsmanlike and rude in the fall of 2024 as it spread online.
Origin
On August 30th, 2024, YouTuber[1] SG Batman posted a video titled, "SG Batman – Gettin' Nat Belt ( OT7 Quanny Diss) | Shot By: @BSHOOTA773" At the 2:46-minute mark, SG Batman says, "BTA, Belt to ass, what's up, come here."
In September 2024, the aforementioned soundbite became a trend amongst youth football players in the U.S., with TikToker[2] @the_only_l33d posting a video on September 8th, 2024, gathering over 400,000 plays and 100,000 likes in two months. The sound on the video has since been removed.
Spread
On September 12th, 2024, TikToker[3] @yoodeuce posted a video of a video of a young football player swinging a belt around in the locker room set to the outro from "Gettin' Not Belt." The video gathered over 4 million views and 500,000 likes and was reposted to the Instagram[4] page @overtimeszn on September 14th, gathering over 80,000 likes in a month.
On September 26th, TikToker[5] @7gotgreathandss posted a POV meme and video captioned, "POV: They not going for the BTA," showing himself scuffling with the opposing team after trying to spank them with his towel after a game. The post gathered over 2.5 million plays and 300,000 likes in three weeks.
On October 7th, 2024, TikToker[7] @jas.huizar posted a video showing a girl's softball team participating in the trend, gathering over 100,000 plays and 10,000 likes in three weeks.
Various TikTokers criticized the trend as it garnered increased attention, warning parents and coaches that young kids may want to try the trend at their next game. Some older TikTokers viewed the BTA trend as disrespectful and unsportsmanlike.
For example, TikToker[6] @coachbeast888 posted a video criticizing the trend on October 10th, 2024, gathering over 1 million plays and 46,000 likes in two weeks.
