Britney Spears’ Knives Dance is a viral video of American singer Britney Spears dancing in her home with two kitchen knives. The video was posted in late September 2023 by the singer on her Instagram account, prompting some fans to worry about her mental health while others found it harmless and humorous. The knives dance also became a caption format and exploitable meme on Twitter / X and Instagram, later becoming known on TikTok as Hibachi Britney.
Origin
On September 25th, 2023, Britney Spears performed the knives dance to an unknown song near the entrance of her California home, the place where she often records her dance performances. She posted the video[1] paired with the caption “I started playing in the kitchen with knives today” on her Instagram account that same day (shown below), which amassed over 448,000 likes in one day.
Spread
The same day Spears uploaded the video, the content was widely shared on other platforms, igniting a debate over the singer's mental health and others also using the video for memes. For instance, on September 26th, 2023, X[2] user @rahsh33m posted Britney's dance paired with the caption "Them: You can’t just cut people out your life like that Me:" The post (shown below) amassed more than 17,300 likes and 8,200 retweets in a day.
TikTokers also used the singer's dancing video for parody and comedy skits as the nickname "Hibachi Britney" also emerged on the platform in late September 2023.
For example, on September 24th, TikToker @jillian..elena[3] posted the video paired with the overlay text "The hibachi chef doing the absolute most at our table," which garnered roughly 1,500 plays and 137 likes in a day. The same day, user @jennie_from_the_block_[4] uploaded the dancing performance paired with the overlay text "Them: Don't start with your bullshit," which amassed more than 1,5000 plays and 40 likes in a day.
