About
Bring a Friend for My Homeboy refers to a remix and exploitable image macro series based on a 2013 Vine by @liveitupnw. The video features a man asking a woman over the phone to bring a date for his friend and lying to her that his friend is cute when asked. People have remixed the video, altering what the friend looks like, and used the format in a four-panel exploitable, which uses still images to the same effect.
Origin
In 2013, Vine user @liveitupnw published the original video. The account has since been deleted. In the video, the main subject is on the phone with his date and asks them to "bring a friend for my homeboy." He repeats the question asked of him over the phone ("Is he cute?"), looks at his friend, who is hairy, pale and grotesque, stares at his friend for a beat, and replies, "Yeah, my n*gga cute."
On October 25th, 2014, @liveitupnw published the video on their Instagram page, where they received more than 225 likes for the video.
Spread
In 2013, parodies of the video began spreading on Vine. On November 6th, 2013, for example, Vine[1] user @KingBach published a remake of the video that received more than 1.7 million loops, 152,000 likes and 87,000 revines.
Others remixed the video, replacing the shot of the "homeboy" with other footage. For example, on September 16th, 2020, YouTuber pamcinema published a version the received more than 87,000 views in less than three months (shown below).
Exploitable Various
On July 5th, 2018, an anonymous Redditor published an exploitable image macro version of the meme in the /r/funny[2] subreddit, which breaks the scene into four panels with subtitles. In the third panel, wherein the main subject looks at his friend, the character is replaced with the meme character Polite Cat. The post received more than 83,000 points (78% upvoted) and 590 comments in less than three years (shown below).
