Origin
On August 11th, 2020, TikToker[1] @brendabeatriz76[1] uploaded a video doing a lip-sync with a friend of the funk song "Duelo Da Amante vs Fiel"[2] (English: "The Duel of Lover vs Faithful") by MC Kátia and MC Nem. The music simulates an argument between a wife and a lover trying to prove who is in a better position. The original video has since been deleted from the platform but garnered over 2 million plays and 131,000 likes in three years. The Twitter[3] meme page @qqrmeme resposted the original video on January 3rd, 2021, which received over 488 likes and 148 retweets in two years.
Spread
The video of the Brazilian girls dancing became a viral template for parody videos in which the original funk song is replaced by different songs over the following years. For example, on March 26th, 2023, Twitter[4] user @heyluisz posted a version of the video featuring the music "As Rosas Não Falam" by Sophie Charlotte and Leticia Colin. The post (shown below) garnered over 56.600 views and 377 likes in five months.
NewJeans "ETA" Dance Trend
On July 23rd, 2023, Instagram[5] user @k.fruuna posted a version of the Brazilian girls dancing meme featuring the K-pop group NewJeans and their song "ETA." The post (shown below) garnered more than 535,124 likes in two weeks.
The video above was turned into a viral dance trend on TikTok, being replicated by the members of the group[6] on July 30th. The post (shown below, left) received over 4.4 million plays and 1 million likes in a week. On August 8th, TikToker[7] @siririina uploaded a video showing four video versions of the dance trend (shown below, right), which received more than 685,000 plays and 186,000 likes in a day.
