Brazil, I'm Devastated refers to a tweet posted by American singer Lady Gaga about the cancelation of her concert at Rock in Rio, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2017. The announcement was made weeks after the singer had revealed that she suffers from fibromyalgia. Online, the tweet became a classic catchphrase used ironically in sad situations, mostly by the LGBTQ+ community, and also when other international singers abruptly cancel concerts expected to be performed in Brazil.
Origin
On September 14th, 2017, American singer Lady Gaga was expected to perform at the Rock in Rio music festival in Brazil. However, due to her recent fibromyalgia diagnosis, she canceled her participation at the festival, tweeting[1] that she was hospitalized and said she had "severe physical pain." The post (shown below) started with the line "Brazil, I'm Devastated," which amassed over 82,000 likes and 33,000 retweets in six years.
Spread
Shortly after the singer's tweet, fans mourned the canceled concert, posting memes and jokes using her phrase "Brazil, I'm Devastated" as a phrasal template or catchphrase. For example, on September 14th, 2017, X[2] user @melisandreunai used Lady Gaga's phrase to joke about not being able to go out to a local bar (shown below, top). The tweet amassed roughly 90 likes and 18 retweets in six years.
On October 19th, 2017, X[3] user @gabluz uploaded an image of Lady Gaga doing yoga paired with the same exact text the singer used in her tweet canceling the Brazilian concert. The post (shown below, bottom) garnered over 1,200 likes and 840 retweets in six years.
