About
Brazil Beat or POV: You Just Woke Up In Brazill is a phrasal template associated with a POV TikTok trend in which the creator pretends to be in Brazil experiencing various situations, accompanied by (and often dancing to) a remixed funk version of a popular sound. The trend started in October 2022 with creators all over the globe making fun of Brazilian TikTok dances.
Origin
Before the trend "POV: you just woke up in Brazil" (and other variants) even started, the TikToker @edilsoo_ [1] had been uploading funk[2] remixes sounds on the platform since June 1st, 2022. The videos consist of using popular audio of Brazilian memes or other types of sounds, including well-known ones like the audios like the Samsung ringtone, Windows starting sound, Motorola Ringtone and others, then transforming them into the same rhythm basis of a funk song. In the example below, posted on August 20th, 2022, the creator used the GTA V Wasted sound and turned it into a funk beat, receiving 1.1 million views and 588 videos tagged in two months.
The earliest known video making a remix of this into the "Brazil Beat" trend was posted to TikTok on October 20th, 2022 by @sr.punche. In the video, the TikToker[3] pretends to be woken by his Brazilian friend's Samsung ringtone with a text in Spanish translating to, "when I go to my Brazilian friend's house and he forgets to turn off his alarm" (shown below). The video gained over 69,000 views in four days. It is unclear if this is the video to start the trend, but this is the earliest notable example.
Spread
The trend spread through a variety of original sounds over the following days. For example, on October 21st, 2022, TikToker[4] @t.tfdzwa posted a version of the trend with a "POV" caption (shown below, left) as if he bought a Motorola smartphone in Brazil, garnering over 2.6 million views in three days. On October 22nd, TikToker[5] @yael_951 posted a version of the trend (shown below, right) with the funk version of the starting Windows PC, receiving over 626,000 views in two days.
Another sound being used in this trend is a remixed version of a bird singing with a funk beat, which has accumulated 601 videos tagged on TikTok. The original video was uploaded by @lummion_[6] on April 3rd, 2022, and in October of the same year, people from different countries started to use the sound for "POV: you just woke up in Brazil" videos, like this post by the Argentinian TikToker[10] @manucllofrein, which has 1.1 million views in one day.
On October 22nd, 2022, another funk sound went viral, this time being a remix of the meme Atumalaca / Acumalaka, with over 1,500 videos using the sound on TikTok in less than a month. The original sound was posted by @srbekthor[7] and was used in posts "POV: watching memes from Brazil" like the one uploaded by @thatkidelvis__[8] (see below, left), garnering 2.9 million views in one day. The audio is also being used with lines such as "POV: you make a Brazilian laugh," like in the video (see below, right) posted by @ani_sayswagwan[9], which received 889,000 views in one day.
