Boys Faceplanting In a Bog or David Rolandsen Berg Swamp Man Videos refers to a series of viral videos in which a group of men comedically faceplant, fall and flip into a moss-covered bog, purportedly in Elverum, Norway. The videos come from influencer David Rolandsen Berg, also known as "Swamp Man" or @joggern on TikTok, who started posting videos in which he and his friends perform acrobatics in the bog as early as May 2021. The videos first gained viral spread in mid-2022 and became the subject of further spread and memes in January 2024.

Origin

On May 17th, 2021, Instagram^[1] user tdm_david, aka David Rolandsen Berg posted a Reel in which he dives face-first into a bog, garnering over 1.4 million views in three years (shown below). This is the earliest known example of the bog diving videos.

Berg continued to post comedic videos in which he and friends faceplant, dive and perform acrobatics in the swamp set to various songs on both his Instagram page and his TikTok page, @joggern. For example, on May 30th, 2022, he posted a video to TikTok^[2] that gained over 153 million views in two years (shown below, left). On September 4th, he posted a video to TikTok^[3] that gained over 30 million views in roughly the same span of time (shown below, right).

Spread

The videos gained viral spread throughout 2022. For example, on June 4th, 2022, Redditor u/Elytrous_ posted a compilation of several of Berg's videos to the /r/funny^[4] subreddit, garnering over 113,000 upvotes in two years. On November 4th and 5th, compilations were posted to /r/funny^[5] and /r/ThatsInsane,^[6] garnering over 106,000 upvotes and 4,300 upvotes, respectively, in just over a year.

On January 6th, 2024, X^[7] user @yeunglean posted a compilation, writing, "us," garnering around 190 likes in three days. That day, X^[8] user @skooookum reposted the video, writing, "if I had a bog like this near me I would make it my entire personality," garnering over 35,000 likes in three days (shown below).

The video became the further subject of reactions and memes that month, largely through quote-reposts on X. On January 7th, X^[9] user @vikkiguy1 posted, "I love that archaeologists have pondered how the bog body people died, mulling over warfare, ritual sacrifice, disease. Most likely just neolithic lads arsing about," garnering over 19,000 likes in two days (shown below, left). On the same day, X^[10] user @secantsegment posted, "this is what ancient britons were doing before the romans invaded," garnering over 105,000 likes in the same span of time (shown below, right).

On January 8th, X^[11] user @uncledoomer posted, "2024 FULLY TAPPED IN" along with images of four prominent memes and viral events from 2024: the Chabad tunnels, the Bass Pro Shops fish tank swimmer, the urn guy and the bog faceplanters, garnering over 10,000 likes in a day (shown below).
