About

Boy Dinner is a variant slang term of Girl Dinner and is paired with food-based images that are meant to represent what a man would stereotypically eat for dinner. The meals that are portrayed are often satirically masculine, which often translates to them being low-brow and simple. The meme started on TikTok but quickly spread elsewhere like Twitter in July 2023.

Origin

On July 2nd, 2023, TikToker[1] @bryaninheelee posted a video in which he referenced the Girl Dinner trend but then offered its antithesis "Boy Dinner." He effectively became the first-known creator to reference the term. Over the course of 12 days, the video gained roughly 1.7 million plays and 230,600 likes (shown below).

Spread

Going into July 2023, more TikTokers posted videos about "Girl Dinner vs. Boy Dinner," such as TikToker[2] @catherineannechiang on July 4th, 2023, whose video gained roughly 414,700 plays and 33,600 likes in 10 days.

Soon after, the concept started to spread elsewhere via meme content. For instance, on July 9th, 2023, Twitter[3] user @RealLyndaCarter quote retweeted a New York Times article about Girl Dinner, writing, "Girl dinner implies the existence of boy dinner and non-binary dinner. It’s food. Just eat." The QRT gained roughly 4,600 likes in five days (shown below, left). On July 12th, 2023, Twitter[4] user @deleuzesionaI tweeted an image of many nitrous oxide canisters, calling it "boy dinner" and gaining roughly 25,500 likes in two days (shown below, right).

Amid the same timeframe, more Boy Dinner videos were appearing on TikTok, such as a video posted by TikToker[5] @arkaneskye on July 11th, 2023, in which he showed his room (similar to a Neckbeard Nest). The video received roughly 2.2 million plays and 382,600 likes in three days (shown below).

After the aforementioned video's upload, other male TikTokers started to use the sound[6] created by @arkaneskye's video, often lip-dubbing his words and then revealing their own Boy Dinners.
