About

Box of Hate is the name of a comic strip from the webcomic Perry Bible Fellowship. In the comic, a child is getting spanked by his father after putting a piece of paper that reads "Spankings" into a box labeled "Things I Hate." The comic strip grew into an exploitable with various different uses.

Origin

Nicholas Gurewitch uploaded "Box of Hate" on July 4th, 2007 (shown below).[1] Though PBF comics are undated, reverse image search engine TinEye[2] first crawled the image on February 7th, 2008.

The comic grew into a popular exploitable shortly after being posted. A thread in which people posted various examples was posted to Newgrounds [3] on January 18th, 2008, though all the images in that thread have been lost (template shown below).

Spread

The exploitable was most popular in the late 2000s and early 2010s. On October 5th, 2010, the comic was posted to the smogon[4] forums, where several exploitables were made (examples shown below). The exploitable had also spread to Funnyjunk[5] that year, as several different versions were posted.

Smiles I Wanna Protect

Eventually, the comic was turned into another exploitable related to I Want to Protect That Smile, where the "Things I Hate Box" was turned into "Smiles I Wanna Protect" and often featured the boy putting images of cute characters into the box. Such and image was posted by an anonymous user on 4chan[6] on June 23rd, 2014 (shown below). It has since turned into a popular exploitable on its own in various fandom communities, particularly on Tumblr.[7]

Memes I Wanna Protect

"Smiles I Wanna Protect" spun off into "Memes I Wanna Protect," an exploitable in which the young boy places images into a box labeled "Memes I Wanna Protect." On August 16th, 2016, the template was posted to Shitpostbot 5000, [8] and on the 21st, Facebook page One Big Meme[9] uploaded an edit where the boy disappeared before putting anything in the box, essentially making the point that no meme is worth protecting (shown below).
