The Bottle Meme, also known as "You May Bottle Anything" (Japanese: 詰めてもいいのよ, Tsumetemo Iinoyo) on the Japanese web, is an image exploitable series in which fictional manga and anime characters are drawn within the confines of glass bottle containers. Since emerging through the Japanese artist community pixiv in April 2009, the meme has spawned at least 1,200 derivative artworks on the site and elsewhere on the English-speaking web, including Tumblr and deviantART.
Origin
The original image template of a plain glass bottle was submitted by Pixiv user Akabane (緋羽)[1] on April 2nd, 2009[2] with the following description: "Please enjoy drawing with this! It's OK to change colors and size. Let's bottle everything!"

The template had reached deviantART by November 2009, but it didn't become widespread until the summer of 2011 when pixiv users began actively producing derivative artworks. By the end of 2011, pixiv's community had generated about 400 illustrations and by the end of the following year, at least 1,700 artworks had been submitted to the site.[3] Throughout 2012, the fad also gained momentum on English-language communities like Danbooru[4], Tumblr[5] and deviantART, where the user group #All-Things-Bottled[6] was formed in February and the keyword "bottle meme" yields approximately 2,000 search results[7] as of January 2013.
