Boom, Headshot is a catchphrase made popular through a web mockumentary series Pure Pwnage, which follows the fictional life of a Canadian pro-gamer named Jeremy and his circle of friends. In the series, the character FPS Doug screams the phrase whenever he shoots an opponent in the head in a video game.
Origin
On July 19th, 2004, the third episode of Pure Pwnage, "FPS Doug," premiered. The episode introduces the character FPS Doug (portrayed by Joel F. Gardiner), who specializes in "First Person Shooter" video games and yells, "Boom! Headshot!" whenever he successfully shoots a video game opponent in the head (shown below).
Two years later, on January 18th, 2006, YouTuber
georgebush000 uploaded the video, receiving more than 11 million views in less than 15 years.
Spread
The phrase grew in popularity on YTMND. On November 22nd, 2005, YTMND[2] user LordShimazu's posted a site that repeats the phrase over pictures of the character. The post received more than 26,000 views in less than 16 years (shown below, left). Over the next year, other sites feauted the sound.[3][4]
Audio of the phrase also grew in usage on YouTube, where played it over video game footage. On June 11th, 2006, YouTuber iafhq posted a clip of a headshot with the audio playing in a slowed form. The post received more than 91,000 views in less than 15 years (shown below, right).
On April 30th, 2007, YouTuber urveen posted a clip from the episode. The post received more than 21 million views. in less than 14 years (shown below).
