About

Booba refers to a series of reaction images, textual reactions and fan art and other memes revolving around the word "booba," a mistype of "boobs," and images of various characters cartoonishly popping their eyes in desire. Closely associated with Awooga! and Hornyposting and originating from a 4chan post, the meme gained popularity in late September 2020 following a viral tweet.

Origin

The Awooga! Pepe variation appearing in the original Booba meme was first posted[1] by an anonymous user on the 4chan board /s4s/ on December 3rd, 2019 (original post and image shown below), spreading on /tv/,[2] /v/[3] and other 4chan board starting in December that year. The image, usually paired with "Awooga!" captions, has been used as a both as reaction to images of large-breasted females, and as a way to mock hornyposting.

On January 28th, 2020, FrankerFaceZ[4] user shadopi added an emote based on the image.

On September 4th, 2020, an anonymous /tv/ user posted[5] the Awooga! Pepe as a reaction to a photograph of the American actress Elizabeth Olsen, writing "booba," likely by mistyping "boobs" due to the S key lying next to the A key on the standard keyboard (post shown below). The post received 15 replies in the thread.

The meme did not see further traction until on September 17th, 2020, an anonymous 4chan[6] user posted a photograph of Twitch streamer and influencer shiftymine, writing "So you consider yourself an aspiring writer? Describe this woman in your best prose." On September 20th, 2020, Twitter[7] user @MasacoAtomico posted a screenshot of the post and a screenshot of the "booba" post side-by-side, with the tweet gaining over 7,500 retweets and 66,100 likes in two weeks (images and tweet shown below).

Precursor

Booba is a variation of Awooga! meme, a copypasta featuring various verbal representations of the noise made when excited cartoon characters see attractive women. The copypasta originates from the 1943 cartoon Red Hot Riding Hood in which the wolf goes mad with desire upon seeing Red on stage (shown below).

Spread

Starting in late September 2020, @MasacoAtomico's post received viral spread online on other platforms, including viral reposts on iFunny[8] and Tumblr.[9]

Following the viral spread of the post, the screenshot of the /tv/ post has received further use as a reaction to images of large-breasted females, and has also been a subject of redraws. The word "booba" has also seen use as a textual reaction to similar content.

A word "bunda" later found popularity as a comment about one's buttocks.
