Boo the “World’s Cutest Dog” was a Pomeranian dog known for its signature short haircut and large social media following. In late January 2019, Boo's owners announced that he died in his sleep.
History
On May 7th, 2009, a Facebook employee created a page for his dog Boo.[1] Within 10 years, the page accumulated upwards of 16 million likes.
On October 22nd, 2010, the pop artist Kesha tweeted[4] a link to the Facebook page along with the message "new boyfriend" (shown below). Within nine years, the tweet gained over 110 likes and 480 retweets.
2012 Death Hoax
In April 2012, the hashtag #RIPBOO began circulating along with rumors that the dog had passed away. On April 11th, journalist Sam Biddle tweeted[5] "Boo the Dog Has Died #deadboo #teamboo #RIPboo #boothedog #boo". The tweet has since been deleted. That day, The Huffpost[6] reported that Chronicle Books confirmed that "Boo the dog is alive."
Death
On January 18th, 2019, the Boo Facebook[3] page announced that Boo "passed away in his sleep" earlier that morning (shown below). Within 24 hours, the post gathered upwards of 294,000 reactions, 71,000 shares and 46,000 comments.
