About

Bold and Brash refers to a painting the Spongebob Squarepants character Squidward made that features an abstract naked Squidward-like character.

Origin

On September 21, 2001, The Spongebob Squarepants episode entitled "Artist Unknown" aired.^[1] The episode features a scene of Squidward showing off his artwork to a critic to be added to a collection. Squidward introduces one of the paintings named "Bold and Brash."^[2] The critic replies with, "More like, Belongs in the Trash" and laughs as the artwork is collected by the janitor and thrown into the trash bin (shown below).

Spread

On September 29th, 2013 the subreddit r/boldandbrash^[6] was created. Oct 1st 2013, Redditor herrmannator0013 a sonic the hedgehog version to r/boldandbrash^[7] (shown below, left). Many edits were made over the years on various platforms. On February 1st, 2017, eva-shinji01^[8] posted an edit of bold and brash into an Evangelion landscape and receveived over 4,200 notes in two years (shown below, right).

On November 24th, 2016, YouTuber Laovaan uploaded a tutorial on how to make the painting yourself (shown below, left). The video has gained over 111,000 views and 8,000 likes in three years. On December 30th, YouTuber Cudgle makes Bold and Brash into an Amiibo (shown below, right). The video has accumulated over 127,000 views in two years (shown below, right).

In Summer of 2017, Instagram user began showing off their Bold and Brash accessories. On June 26th chelseaboisclair^[3] posted a picture of their eye makeup (shown below, left). That same day, bvby.ghoul^[5] posted a picture of someone with a Bold and Brash shirt (shown below, center). On July 5th, cascourt^[4] posted a picture of a Bold and Brash tattoo (shown below, right).
