About
Bob Costas / Ron Darling Parodies refer to tweets sending up the style of Major League Baseball (MLB) announcers Bob Costas and Ron Darling, who on several occasions have been paired together for playoff games. Similar to the Van Gundy, Jackson, Breen Parodies that poke fun at a popular trio of NBA commentators, the parodies imagine Costas as exceptionally loquacious, giving poetic commentary that has little to do with the game at hand, followed by Darling offering a matter-of-fact observation about the game. The series of memes initially appeared on Twitter / X in late 2022, spreading over the following years.
Origin
The earliest parodies of the Bob Costas and Ron Darling pairing came in October 2022 when the pair were commentating on a series between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians.
The earliest known parody was posted on October 14th, 2022, by Twitter user @MikeBeauvais,[1] whose parody gained over 120 retweets and 1,600 likes in two years.
Spread
More viral examples of the format were tweeted on October 15th, 2022. For example, on that day, Twitter user @FitzyMoPena[2] posted a parody that gained over 2,800 retweets and 30,000 likes in two years.
The format appeared over the following two years when the two were paired together to call a playoff series. For example, on October 7th, 2023, Twitter user @danielleRoyalKC[3] posted a parody that gained over 1,100 retweets and 13,000 likes in one year.
On October 8th, 2024, Twitter user @Lizzie_Baseball[4] posted a joke that gained over 770 retweets and 10,000 likes in less than one day.
