About
Block This Overhead refers to a series of exploitable parodies of the This Is Feminism template, showing one character with their head bowed saying "sorry for being a man" and another performing a fighting game move while saying "block this overhead."
Origin
On November 5th, 2020, Twitter[5] user tricksyfroggy posted a "This Is Feminism" parody in which the female character is doing a fighting game move and saying "block this overhead" (shown below). The meme received over 1,500 likes, 780 reposts and seven replies in roughly five years.
In fighting games on a 2D-axis, players can attempt to damage their opponent by doing a move that goes over the opponent's low block. This is called an "overhead." For example, Terry from Fatal Fury's "Crack Shoot" is an overhead.[2]
Spread
Over the following months, the image became an exploitable template as people edited the original with various characters.
For example, on March 8th, 2021, iFunny[1] user Kallie_El reposted the original image by tricksyfroggy to the site (shown below), though it did not receive significant engagement.
On March 25th, 2021, Redditor dragonoctus posted a variation with Pikmin characters to /r/pikmin,[3] gaining over 520 points in six months (shown below, left).
On June 11th, Twitter user @spoon_cats[4] posted a variation using Guilty Gear characters, gaining over 2,400 retweets and 8,500 likes in three months (shown below, right).
