Blini Cat

About

Blini Cat refers to an image macro of a cat sitting on a chair next to a plate of blinis. The Russian cat named Jazz Cat featured in the image from 2015 has gained a large following on social media. The image turned into an object-labeling meme after the blinis were edited and replaced by a waffle in November 2019.

Origin

On April 12th, 2015, Redditor Moridakkubokka posted the image of Jazz Cat in front of a plate of blinis to r/cats^[1] (shown below). The image received over 7,100 points (94% upvoted) in four years.

Spread

On April 12th, 2015, The image was posted to r/photoshopbattles^[3] and gained over 6,400 points (90% upvoted) in four years. Redditors like CptSasquatch (shown below, left), empty_string_ (show below, center) and Sarkos (shown below, right) all participated in the battle.

On November 18th, Jazz.Cat posted their first Instagram^[2] photo. The Instagram account has gained over 19,100 followers in four years. On September 14th, 2017, Twitter user @penultimagent^[4] tweeted an image of their folder of Blini Cat photos (shown below, left). On September 20th, 2019, Twitter user @fruitysnacktime^[5] tweeted, "finally got my cat jazz aka blini cat tattoo. a bizarre and powerful work of art. now i just have to scrub that wretched stain on my ankle off because cat jazz deserves better 🤡" (shown below, right). The tweet gained over 80 likes in three months.

Waffle Edits

On November 24th, 2019, Redditor a_spider420 posted an object-labeled image of blini cat with a waffle to r/memes.^[6] The post received over 96,600 points (94% upvoted) in a week (shown below, left). The next day, Redditor yourstepmomscat posted the same image but with the waffle labeled "the lego spiderman set my aunt gave me" and the cat "me at my 16th birthday party" to r/dankmemes^[7] (shown below, right). The post accumulated over 40,600 points (97% upvoted) in a week (shown below, right).
