Blind Myself with a Lamp for No Reason is a viral video of a young boy purposely shining a lamp in his eyes, which first appeared online in January 2019. The original video has since been removed, but images from the video have been used in a series of ironic image macros about the quality of the content found online.

Origin

The original video by YouTuber Ariel Paul The Sonic The Hedgehog Fan Est. 2007 was likely uploaded in January 2019 but could not be confirmed because it has since been deleted.[1][4] However, on January 16th, 2019, YouTuber Gilian Vanhoorewder uploaded a mirror of the video, which has since received more than 44,000 views in less than one year (shown below).

Spread

On January 16th, Redditor [2] SimoTRU7H posted a screenshot of the video. The screenshot in the meme acts as the 2019 answer to the caption "1950: In 2020 we'll have flying cars." The post received more than 20,000 points (98% upvoted) and 190 comments in less than one year (shown below, left).

That day, Redditor[3] TheBungulo posted a screenshot of the video in the /r/holdmyjuicebox subreddit. The post received more than 4,000 points (95% upvoted) and 90 comments in less than one year (shown below, right).


Over the next week, other installments of the "Blind Myself With a Lamp for No Reason" were posted. On January 19th and 23rd, YouTuber Eggnog posted Parts 2 and 3, respectively. Part 2 received more than 188,000 views and Part 3 received more than 10,000 views in less than one years (shown below, left and right).


On December 2nd, 2019, Redditor[5] hetestolz posted a Roses Are Red meme in the /r/memes subreddit. The post received more than 30,000 points (97% upvoted) and 100 comments in less than one week (shown below).
