About

Bismarck Is The Capital of North Dakota refers to an exploitable template taken from several panels of a Powerpuff Girls comic in which Blossom points out that "Bismarck is the capital of North Dakota, but Fargo is the largest city in the state." After Buttercup complains about the conversation, Bubbles asks if they want to go to Applebee's, after which Blossom agrees, turns to Buttercup, and says "Fuck you." The comic has been adopted to feature numerous characters.

Origin

The original panel comes from Powerpuff Girls #3, a portion of which was published on CBR on November 26th, 2013.[1]

On September 22nd, 2016, Tumblr user particlemilk[2] posted an edited version of the panels with the Bismarck dialogue, gaining over 40,000 notes. However, it is unclear if this is the first place the panel was posted, as it is tagged "welcome to my old jokes" and a later Reddit repost of the comic said it was found "on an old Myspace page."[3]

Spread

Over the following several years, the comic and its dialogue would be adapted to feature different characters. For example, on July 13th, 2018, iFunny user Autocons_RWBY[4] posted an edit of the comic (shown below, left). On April 28th, 2020, My Silly Comics posted an example using their comics' characters, gaining over 140 retweets and 960 likes (shown below, right).

Other franchises used in exploitable variations of the comic include Jojo's Bizarre Adventure (shown below, left) and Super Mario Brothers (shown below, right).
