About

Big Pant or Big Jakt refers to a series of fan art and redraw memes that present polar character designs, often with one design wearing a large clothing item on their upper body and the other wearing a large clothing item on their lower body. Spawned by a viral meme juxtaposing characters wearing big pants and big jackets, the format achieved virality on Twitter in mid-June 2023.

Origin

On June 4th, 2023, Twitter[1] user @skelterheiter tweeted an image of two character designs, one wearing an oversized pair of pants and captioned "big pant" and the other wearing an oversized jacket and captioned "big jakt," writing, "the only types of character design that matter" (image and tweet shown below, left and right). The tweet gained over 40,400 retweets and 348,300 likes in two weeks.

Spread

On June 7th, 2023, Twitter[2] user @AWDtwit posted two drawings of their OC character wearing the pants and the jacket, writing "she can handle both." The tweet (shown below) received over 1,200 retweets and 13,200 likes in 10 days.

In the following days, multiple other users posted a drawing of their OCs and other characters wearing the designs. For example, on June 8th, Twitter[3] user @RottenArmor posted a fan art that gained over 2,000 retweets and 22,700 likes in eight days (shown below, left). On June 9th, Twitter[4] user @LazyGoobster posted a drawing that garnered over 1,400 retweets and 21,900 likes in one week (shown below, center).

On June 10th, 2023, Twitter[5] user @DannysArtz posted the earliest found derivative version of the format, posting a drawing of a character wearing a pair of large boots, captioning it, "BIG BOOT πŸ‘’." The image (shown below, right) received over 600 retweets and 5,900 likes in six days.

On June 11th, 2023, Twitter[6] user @ItIsNowSoupTime posted two character designs, one wearing a large hat and the other a pair of large shoes, captioned "big hat or big shoe." The tweet (shown below, left) received over 6,100 retweets and 82,800 likes in five days. On June 11th, Twitter[7] user @DriftingZim posted a "big gloves / big scarf" version that received over 4,300 retweets and 4,000 likes in the same timeframe.

In the following days, multiple artists on Twitter submitted their favorite versions of "big X" design tropes, often juxtaposing one design against a polar opposite.
