Big Mouth Screech refers to video remixes featuring a very high pitched noise replacing moments of other videos.

Origin

While the origin of the meme is unclear, one of the earliest known videos to use the effect appeared on November 19th, 2018 in a remix posted by sadie ann (shown below).

Spread

On November 19th, 2018, Gabbie Hanna appeared in a YouTube video for the site Genius in which she explained the lyrics to her song, "Monster." While singing the chorus, it appears as though the high note in the title lyric is edited in.

On December 6th, YouTuber Ashley cc posted a clip in which Hanna sings the song but the high note is replaced with a high-pitched screech. She credited YouTuber Jay McGrath for creating the original video.

On December 9th, YouTuber Devin Corwin posted a video compilation of parodies of the clip, including the screech edit, gaining over 1.3 million views (shown below, left). On December 25th, 2018, YouTuber MrGriffin posted the audio of the clip for future remixes (shown below, left).

In the following weeks, many more remixes using the screech appeared on YouTube. On December 30th, 2018, YouTuber Flater uploaded a clip from Full Metal Jacket using the sound effect, gaining over 14,000 views (shown below, left). User Aquadis posted a He Ruined My Dream Journal edit on December 13th that gained over 16,000 views (shown below, right).
