About
Big John Machine refers to a viral trend in which videos of high-end, extremely expensive home audio equipment playing Geoff Castelucci's cover of "Big Bad John" are shared on social media, particularly on TikTok. The name Big John Machine is derived from the song's usage amongst audiophiles for testing bass frequencies on audio equipment. The meme attracted significant attention in late 2025 to early 2026 due to the machines' exorbitant prices and bizarre build.
Origin
The earliest known usage of the term "Big John Machine" comes from the r/audiophile subreddit. On April 1st, 2025, Reddit[1] user u/ice3353 posted a thread titled "Big Bad John as an Audiophile Recording?"
In the post, the user relates listening to the 1961 song "Big Bad John," originally performed by Jimmy Dean,[2] stating: "It’s an interesting example of how good audio systems can bring out more life in a recording." Another user, u/mlgraves, responded to the thread, commenting: "You should find the version by Geoff Castellucci. It's on Spotify and Apple Music." The usage of the Castellucci cover would later become a main component of the later meme.
Two days later, on April 3rd, 2025, Reddit[3] user u/OldNovel1633 responded to the thread, commenting "$300k big John machine." Screenshots of the thread can be viewed below:
One of the earliest known instances of the Big John Machine appearing on TikTok[4] came when user @cheesyt03s uploaded a video of a home-made device with the caption: "$15 big John machine." Notably, the post was also uploaded on April 3rd, 2025, and has received 465,400 views and 27,500 likes as of February 2026.
Spread
Early iterations of the meme showcased cheaply made devices. On October 24th, 2025, TikTok[5] user @yoshicubed uploaded a video of their $2 Big John Machine that had been fashioned with a Play-Doh cup and toy speaker. The video has since received 515,500 views and 40,600 likes.
Early in the life of the trend, most videos featured cheaply made Big John machines. By October, creators began pairing the same cheaply made machines with exaggerated captions listing prices into the millions and billions. By late 2025 to early 2026, videos increasingly showcase legitimately high-priced audio gear.
On December 2nd, 2025, the TikTok[6] page @audiophile_highend_audio, which posts expensive and unconventional-looking high-end stereos, began using the Big Bad John audio to showcase HiFi systems. One video[7], posted February 6th, 2026, presented what the page claimed to be "$2 Million Dollars Big John Machine." The video received over 3 million views and 156,500 likes in just six days.
