BibleThump is a graphic emoticon featuring the face of the character Isaac from the video game The Binding of Isaac, which is commonly used to convey a feeling of sadness in various chats hosted on the live streaming video platform Twitch.
Origin
In 2012, the BibleThump emote was added to Twitch, allowing users to post the Isaac graphic by typing "BibleThump" in chat.
Spread
On January 13th, 2013, the website ICryEveryTime was launched, featuring a flash animation of BibleThump emotes falling down the screen with a violin playing in the background (shown below).
On January 23rd, GameFAQs[3] user SteLo4122 submitted a post asking "What does Kappa and biblethump mean seriously?". On February 19th, 2014, Redditor ralphplzgo submitted a post asking about the meaning of BibleThump to /r/OutOfTheLoop,[2] where Redditor Sauceror221 cited its origins on Twitch. On August 8th, Mashable[1] published an article titled "'Twitch-speak': A Guide to the Secret Emoji Language of Gamers," which described BibleThump as a emote for "sadness."
