Bernie Sanders Looking Up on the Phone is an image macro series featuring a photograph of 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Senator Bernie Sanders talking on the phone and looking up. Online, people have paired the image with another image joking about what he is looking at it.

Origin

On March 5th, 2020, the Twitter ^[1] account for ABC 15, an Arizona-based ABC affiliate news outlet, shared the image with the caption "Photos of Bernie Sanders taking a walk and talking on the phone in a Phoenix neighborhood before his rally tonight." The post received more than 1,200 likes and 175 retweets in less than one week (shown below).

Spread

Over the next few days, others began adding a second image to the tweet, joking about what Sanders is looking at. For example, the following day, Twitter^[2] user @importedtejuino added a photograph of a horse on a roof (shown below, left). Twitter^[3] user @Srirachachau tweeted the photo with a screenshot from the end of the film Happy Gilmore, which received more than 8,000 likes and 1,000 retweets in less than two days (shown below, center). The following day, Twitter ^[4] user @AaronBahamondes added a purple tint to the image and added a screenshot from the film Blade Runner 2049. The post received more than 21,000 likes and 4,700 retweets in less than one week (shown below, right).
