Barbie Movie Poster Memes, also known as Parody Barbie Movie Posters, refers to a series of Photoshops and spoofs of promotional movie posters for the 2023 film Barbie. The memes were inspired and based on a set of Barbie posters uploaded to Twitter in early April 2023 that featured various actors in the film, such as Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and Michael Cera. The parody posters were made using the website BarbieSelfie.ai, which is a generator tool launched by the company to create custom variants.

Origin

On April 4th, 2023, the Twitter account of @barbiethemovie posted multiple tweets^[1][2] that started threads of Barbie movie posters, featuring the actors in the film with their characters' names. The first tweet^[1] gained roughly 94,300 likes in less than a day and featured Margot Robbie as Barbie (shown below, left). The second tweet^[2] gained roughly 50,500 likes and featured Ryan Gosling as Ken (shown below, center). One of the replies^[3] that the account uploaded featured Michael Cera as Allan (shown below, right), earning roughly 17,200 likes in less than a day.

In addition to the various posters, the @barbiethemovie Twitter^[4] account posted a tweet that linked a website called BarbieSelfie.ai,^[5] which was an artificial intelligence generator that could insert a user's selfie into the poster in order to make a parody Barbie movie poster. The tweet gained roughly 6,300 likes.

At around 9:20 a.m. EST, Twitter^[6] user @cronencunt posted a photoshopped Barbie poster, inserting the Succession character Kendall Roy as Barbie's Ken (shown below). The tweet received roughly 27,300 likes in less than a day and is currently the first discovered meme of the genre.

In the hours that followed @cronencunt's tweet,^[6] multiple meme creators on Twitter inserted their own favorite characters from movies, TV and video games into the template. For instance, an early iteration was uploaded by Twitter^[7] user @paddysroyco who showed Dennis Reynolds from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, earning roughly 4,600 likes in less than a day (shown below, left). Twitter^[8] user @nitefilm inserted actress Mia Goth in reference to her character in Pearl, earning roughly 2,100 likes in two hours (shown below, right).

More iterations surfaced going into April 2023, predominantly made using the website BarbieSelfie.ai.^[5]
