Balls In My Mouth, I'm Gay is a catchphrase and a copypasta often used as a non-seqiuitur caption for memes and a derailing argument in online debates. The catchphrase achieved popularity on X / Twitter in mid-December 2023 after a user posted image macros captioned with it.

Origin

Prior to December 2023, the catchprase saw several viral instances of use on social media. Notably, on September 11th, 2020, X / Twitter^[1] user @paricyte posted it, with the post garnering over 880 reposts and 18,000 likes in three years (shown below, left). On May 25th, 2023, X^[2] user @dilfshub hornyposted a GIF of actor Chris Evans paired with the caption (shown below, right). The post garnered over 1,100 reposts and 11,000 likes in seven months.

The catchphrase achieved popularity in mid-December 2023 after X / Twitter user @SkinnyTuna posted multiple image macros captioned with the phrase in a span of several days. On December 14th, 2023, @SkinnyTuna posted the first such meme, an Am I So Out Of Touch? recaptioned, "Balls in my mouth, I'm gay," which received over 130 reposts and 1,600 likes on X^[3] in one week (shown below).

On December 14th and in the following days, X^[4]^[5] user @SkinnyTuna posted more memes captioned with the phrase: for example, a post made on December 14th, 2023, which referenced an inside joke in the user's social media circle, received over 240 reposts and 2,300 likes in one week (shown below, left). On December 15th, the user posted a Yeonmi Park meme that received over 260 reposts and 6,500 likes in one week (shown below, right).

In the following days, more users joined in on the trend, posting memes captioned with the phrase. For example, on December 15th, 2023, X^[6] user @weedcatholic posted a meme that received over 170 reposts and 2,300 likes in one week (shown below).
